Africa's VAR Leap: CAF Announces Historic Step into Group Stages
29 March 2026
Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), revealed on Sunday a new move to advance the continent's flagship competitions.
Speaking at a CAF press conference in Cairo, he announced an official plan to extend the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to the group stage for African club competitions, aiming to raise refereeing fairness to the highest levels.
The move marks a shift many clubs have long demanded, as calls for VAR coverage in all rounds have grown louder in recent seasons.
The CAF official described the plan as a milestone, noting that VAR will begin with the knockout rounds for now, with a timeline and training measures to ensure smooth implementation.
Critics have argued that expanding VAR without sufficient training or infrastructure could lead to delays, while supporters say consistent use would reduce questionable calls and protect the integrity of Africa's top competitions.
Motsepe added that the goal is to roll out VAR across both the CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup in due course, subject to practical testing and stakeholder feedback.
