Racism Overshadows Spain-Egypt Friendly
Days after the Spain-Egypt friendly sparked broad debate, Spain was again confronted with racist abuse on Wednesday.
The match ended 0-0, but the crowd booed during the Egyptian national anthem and chanted insults directed at Islam.
The Spanish government, the Spanish Football Federation, and prominent figures including Luis de la Fuente, the national team coach, and star Lamine Yamal condemned what happened at the stadium.
In a separate Segunda Division fixture, Sporting de Gijón faced Racing Santander, and a fresh incident unfolded.
According to Marca, Borja Jiménez, Sporting’s coach, called the referee in the 36th minute to report abuse from the stands at El Sardinero, and play resumed a minute later.
Referee Daniel Balencia, the match delegate, paused the match and announced over the public address that the stoppage was due to racist abuse. However, the official protocol did not require the arms-crossing gesture; the referee spoke only with the coach and the Racing delegate.
Racing Santander later identified the two alleged offenders in the stands and, with security, asked them to leave their seats and exit the stadium.
After the game, Borja Jiménez commented that the issue is about awareness; while many fans are accustomed to abuse, it is unacceptable and should not be normalized.
He added that the problem is not just Racing Santander fans; some of his own supporters have engaged in abuse, but he cautioned against generalizing about all fans, noting that it is sad when people attend matches to insult rather than enjoy football.
