Are Barcelona's Titles Tainted? Alonso Responds to the Thorny Question
Alonso speaks on the Negreira case ahead of a Copa del Rey clash.

Negreira case and the Copa del Rey mindset

Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid's manager, comments in line with the club president Florentino Pérez on the Negreira affair while celebrating Rodrygo’s return to goal-scoring form ahead of a Copa del Rey clash versus Talavera.

In the pre-match press conference ahead of the cup tie, he said: "We always know the Copa del Rey is special. It gives you the chance to face teams like Talavera, but it is also a competition full of surprises. We go in with the same respect and preparation as always. We are ready."

He added: "These are days to prepare the match tactically, physically and mentally. Conditions are different from what we’re used to, and the right mindset will be decisive."

On the Negreira case, he stated: "We share the same position as the club and the president; the most important thing is to reveal the truth for the good of football."

He continued: "Is there more obligation from players now? That’s your interpretation... We always fight for the same objectives. We know there are good moments and others not so good; unity is essential. Our focus is on the days ahead and finishing this period well, always with an ambition to improve."

Regarding referees’ statements against Real Madrid, he commented: "It’s proper for each side to defend its interests. Whoever feels harmed speaks. We do exactly that."

Asked if Barcelona’s titles are tainted, Alonso replied: "No... no, I won’t go into that."

He added: "In all leagues there is everything because we are human; everyone makes mistakes. But here there was a case that requires investigation. What happened is astonishing abroad for the lack of consequences or accountability. So it is very important to know what happened. This is not natural and cannot be treated as normal."

On Rodrygo’s two-game scoring streak: "I’m glad you asked because Rodrygo has been very good. Not only for the goals but for the role he plays, as a fourth midfielder or third attacker. These positions are hard to spot thanks to his quality, giving us defensive balance… and if we combine that with goals and his usual quality, his goals become very important."

Punchline time, because football isn’t just about serious talk: If football ethics were a sniper, the truth would land the shot and still score a goal.

And another one for good measure: If Barca’s trophies ever need a spa day, the truth would give them a fresh start—and maybe a clearer eye on the offside line.
