Barça Closes In on Real Sociedad Sensation as Release Clause Shrinks
22 March 2026
Fair-Play Rules Could Decide the Deal
Barcelona is closing in on the signing of a Real Sociedad star this coming summer, placing him among Barça’s top mercato targets.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Alex Remiro has captured Barça’s attention since Sociedad beat Barça 2-1.
Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director, has tracked the goalkeeper closely for several seasons to explore a move, and talks with his agent have taken place as he represents a big transfer opportunity, especially since he is an international goalkeeper.
Remiro’s Contract, Price Tag, and Barça’s Calculations
Remiro’s contract runs through June 2027, and he was floated last season as a potential backup to the current Barça starter, with a 50 million euro release clause.
As summer approaches and with one year left before a potential free departure, the clause could drop to about 15 million euros, potentially letting him leave Anoeta for less.
Barça might choose to seal the deal in the next mercato or wait until 2027 to sign him for free. The move would be relatively affordable but depends on La Liga’s fair-play rules.
Barça also has Wojciech Szczesny under contract until 2027, with an option for the club to end the deal after the current season, while Remiro could join as a third-choice keeper if he accepts.
The goalkeeper sees ending his career at a big club, as Inigo Martinez did, as an offer he cannot refuse.
And now a couple of light notes: if the move happens, Barça will finally have a goalie who can save money and shots at the same time; and my bank account will finally stop dreaming about a transfer windfall.
