Barça in the Balance: Font's Push for Change and a Messi Question
Barça's presidential race blends political ambition with a club's storied past. As the debate over Messi's possible exit intensifies, the question becomes who can steer the club toward a sustainable future.
Vision, Debt, and a Madrid-Inspired Playbook
Victor Font, a candidate for Barcelona's presidency, commented on the debate with rival Joan Laporta, saying the exchange revealed the true character of the former president.
Font argued, as cited by the Spanish daily Sport, that Laporta comes across as selfish and labels anyone demanding transparency as a bad Barcelona fan; he questions how the club is actually run.
Font warned: If Barca owes 2.5 billion euros and profits remain scarce, the ownership model would be at risk.
He also noted that Real Madrid has been an inspiring model with bold, unconventional ideas, including selling 10% of the club to an investment fund.
On the proposed legal reform, Font said: "With the legal reform we propose, we will ensure the sustainability of the ownership model; should any populist president try to change it, a public referendum with at least 66% turnout and 75% approval would be required."
Font also touched on Messi's departure, saying: "I don't think Messi will speak publicly until Sunday, but I hope he does to clarify the truth so members aren't voting misled by the results achieved under the current leadership."
Font stressed that the club must keep members informed and defend a transparent path for governance.
Punchline 1: Barca’s budget is so tight the accountants carry a flashlight at night—just to see where the money went. Sniper precision would be jealous.
Punchline 2: Font’s reform hits like a sniper shot: precise, clean, and over before the defense knows what happened—unlike this transfer season, which keeps adding questions.
