Barcelona at a Crossroads: Font’s Bid Could Rewire Flick’s Future and Deco’s Fate
8 February 2026
The German coach isn’t keen on working with Font.
Victor Font, the leading challenger to Joan Laporta in Barcelona’s presidency race set for March 15, outlined his view of the club’s sporting structure, saying that if he wins, Deco will not remain as sporting director.
Font told RAC1 that Deco will not be the sporting director and that a new structure will be built to suit the coach Hans Flick better; names will not be announced yet because of contracts, and no one will be outside the sporting structure.
Flick's stance
In contrast, Flick offered a different take on Deco, saying he is very happy with the current setup, with mutual trust and shared philosophy; the focus is on players, and there is no hesitation about what needs to be done yet.
Font also expressed a wish for Flick to stay, as Flick has one year left on his Barcelona contract; however, his continuation is unclear if Font wins because Marca reports he could leave after his final year.
Flick is associated with Laporta’s project and is willing to extend his deal if Laporta is re-elected; a preliminary agreement exists, but no formal step is planned before July 1 when Laporta would take office if he wins.
Punchline: Barca’s strategy is so precise that a sniper would need a calendar.
Punchline 2: If this transfer saga were a sniper drill, the target would keep moving and the clock would never stop screaming July.
