Flick's Fixes, Yamal's Spark: Barcelona Edge Bilbao 1-0
7 March 2026
German coach Hansi Flick spoke after Barcelona's 1-0 victory at Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, highlighting the gains from a hard-fought win in La Liga. He also revealed why midfielder Marc Bernal was taken off at the start of the second half.
Defensive unity and the backline
Flick emphasized the importance of the team’s defensive discipline, noting that the 11th league clean sheet underlines the value of playing as a unit. He explained that when they do not press high, pressures can appear at the back, but the squad defends together and remains faithful to their philosophy.
Yamal’s night and the substitution
Regarding Lamine Yamal, who scored the only goal, Flick said he did not have his best game today, but his ability to influence matches in open spaces is clear, and he continues to train for these moments. He praised having Yamal in the lineup as a constant threat going forward.

Speaking after the match, Flick added that reaching 11 clean sheets in La Liga is a sign of the team’s balance, saying, "We defend as a unit, and when we lag in attack, the defense has to cover more. Confidence comes from playing our way."
And on Yamal’s performance he concluded, "He didn’t have his best night, but you can see the quality that can decide games, especially with space to run; he always trains for these moments and it’s great to have him on the pitch."
Punchline 1: If jokes were goals, I’d still be warming the bench, but at least the punchlines run through the defense.
Punchline 2: My humor is so on target that even the referee would book me for offside when I’m delivering the punchlines.
