Font fires back at Laporta amid Barcelona’s presidency race

Victor Font, a Barcelona presidential hopeful, insists the club’s victories have never come from the whistle, joking that the referee’s whistle should not be his co-pilot in the club’s flight plan.

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Font revealed he has cleared the signature hurdle, collecting 2,337 signatures to become an official contender for the March 15 election.

Regarding preparations for the first debate scheduled for Monday morning, Font said the aim is to present proposals that compare two models: “Barcelona as people and interests” and “Barcelona for all.”

Font added: “We are not yet drawing out the club’s full potential; if we did, Barca would be unstoppable. I look forward to facing these two models, and it should be clear to members: the March 15 choice will be between the old Barça and the new, exciting Barça.”

On the escalation by former president Joan Laporta and his accusations of demagoguery and destabilization, Font replied: “What destabilizes the club isn’t proposing a different model, but failing to sign players and aligning with a group that claims world leadership in communications while it is a newly formed joint venture led by a Moldovan-born leader with legal issues, and a local director named Francisco Maza who was implicated in ski-pass fraud in Andorra.”

Font then addressed broader governance concerns: “The club’s reputation is harmed by ties to a Congo-linked company (ZKP) and by restricting postal voting for thousands of members, despite it being activated in 2021.”

Touching the Nigerira case, Font stated: “I don’t understand the request to retreat from that issue; I consider it a defamation and reality distortion. Since the case surfaced, the real harmed party has been the member, and what happened cast shadows on the greatest team in history. This harms Barça, even as everyone knows we didn’t win a single match thanks to referees; we even lost La Liga 2014 under Tata Martino in the Nigerira era.”

In short, Font’s message is a call for transparency, a clear alternative vision, and a reminder that a club’s heartbeat should be the fans and players, not controversy over narratives or old disputes. If football logic had a blueprint, Font promises to redraw it with a Barça for all, not a Barça for a circle of insiders.

Punchline 1: If Barca’s strategy were a sniper rifle, Font says the only thing it should shoot is the ball to the back of the net, not the club’s reputation. Punchline 2: He adds, “In football as in life, the whistle may blow, but the real victory is voting with your feet—preferably loud and with a chorus.”
