Fresh setback for Pyramids ahead of the Egyptian Super Cup
Pyramids FC received a fresh setback ahead of their participation in the Egyptian Super Cup, which will be hosted in the United Arab Emirates from November 6 to 9.
Pyramids will take part by invitation from the sponsor, alongside Al Ahly, the league champions, and Zamalek, Egypt Cup holders, with Ceramica Cleopatra as capital cup winners.
Pyramids will face Zamalek in the semi-final; the winner will meet the victor of the Al Ahly versus Ceramica Cleopatra clash in the final.
Dr. Mustafa Al-Maniri, the club’s medical chief, explained the injury dogging winger Mustafa Fathy after scans and comprehensive medical checks.
Fathy was forced off minutes after kick-off in the first leg with Ethiopian Insurance in the CAF Champions League, after suffering a hamstring injury.
The medical update said the scans confirmed a hamstring tear, leaving him sidelined for about four weeks and starting a rehabilitation program to gear up for a quick return.
The setback is a heavy blow for manager Krunoslav Jurčić, who relies on the 31-year-old right winger.
Fathy joined Pyramids in September 2022 on loan from Al-Taawoun before the club bought his contract a year later.
The forward has featured 139 times for Pyramids, scoring 38 goals and providing 24 assists, delivering his best form to date despite earlier flashes of quality at his former club, Zamalek.
He helped lead Pyramids to their first-ever CAF Champions League title, along with the CAF Super Cup and Egypt’s Cup.
Injuries continued to bite the squad, with Ramadan Sobhi sidelined by knee pain and travelling to Germany for checks, while Osama Jalal also sat out with a hamstring in the Intercontinental Cup clash.
Pyramids will meet Ethiopian Insurance in the second leg of the CAF CL Round of 32 before resuming the Egyptian league and then turning attention to the UAE-hosted Super Cup.
On the transfer front, a well-placed source denied talks with Mali's Aliou Diang, noting Pyramids rarely comment on rumors and still market players through agents.
They also stressed that Al Ahly had not spoken with Mohamed Hamdi, noting his contract runs to 2027 and that both sides want to extend another season.
The source added Hamdi remains essential to the squad and the club has no intention of letting him go, despite chatter about departures of Sobhi, Adel, or Al-Shaibi.
The club has also opened talks to extend Weston Maiili for two more seasons, given his importance to the side.
Maiili remains a key figure for Pyramids, shining this season and scoring a hat-trick against goalkeeper Edouardo Mendy.
Maiili also helped win the CAF Champions League for the club’s first time, and stands as a leading scorer and African Player of the Year candidate.
