City Close to Peak, Guardiola Keeps the Secret Safe
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said his side are closer than ever to reclaiming their best form, despite a heavy Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.
Madrid sealed a 5-1 aggregate win in the last-16, dashing City’s hopes of repeating their continental heroics from 2023.
Guardiola stressed that the setback did not dent his belief in the progress made in recent months, acknowledging a gap that still needs closing at the highest level.
City still have a chance to lift silverware this season, with a Carabao Cup final against Arsenal on the horizon, and they remain in the hunt for the league title and FA Cup glory.
Asked about the work ahead, Guardiola said: 'We are very close in many areas... it is just latent now and will flourish soon. I feel we are close.'
He added: 'In other aspects we need more time to understand what is required, so players grasp what it takes to be strong across several positions, but we are near in most aspects.'
Guardiola believes this season's development already surpasses what City produced in the disappointing 2024-25 campaign, regardless of how the current season ends.
He cited the plan to maintain consistency over an 11-month schedule, noting that the type of players at City should help them stay at a high level in big games.
When asked what still eludes the team, Guardiola replied: 'I won’t tell you, but I know it and the players know it too.'
Meanwhile, Guardiola confirmed City’s FA Cup progress and reiterated that the title race remains wide open, with several targets within reach.
Punchline: City’s secret sauce may be patience—if patience were a player, it would probably win the league on solo runs.
Punchline 2: And if secrets were trophies, Guardiola would own the transfer window and the rumor mill would apply for a season pass.
