When a Golf Night Goes to Court: Ex-Man City Star Arrested in Merseyside

Arrest Shocks Former Manchester City Star After Golf Club Incident
In a quiet Merseyside night near a golf club, events quickly escalated from sport to a legal matter.
British tabloid Daily Mail reports that former England international Joey Barton, 43, who played for Manchester City, Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers, was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.
Police said Barton was among two men detained after reports of an assault in the Hoyton area near golf clubs in Merseyside.
Emergency services attended, with injuries to the face and ribs; the victim was taken to hospital for assessment.
In a High Court session on Tuesday, while a defamation claim against Barton by a former player was under consideration, his lawyer noted an urgent call from a Liverpool police station had arrived just before the hearing.
The authorities confirmed two men, aged 43 and 50, were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm under Section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act, Merseyside Police said.
Barton, who previously coached Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers, remained in custody following Monday's arrest.
He had represented England in a single international appearance.
Two lighthearted punchlines to end on a lighter note: If his golf swing was as polished as his alibis, he’d ace the course. And perhaps next time he should stick to par for the course instead of taking a detour to the courtroom.
