Higuita at 59: The Scorpion Save Strikes Again in a Colombia Tribute
25 December 2025
Higuita's Legendary Scorpion Return
The former Colombia goalkeeper, Rene Higuita, steals the spotlight once more by recreating his legendary 'Scorpion save'.
Thirty years ago, on September 6, 1995, Higuita, Colombia's national team goalkeeper, famously stopped a ball with the Scorpion pose against England in a Wembley friendly.
Jamie Redknapp powered a shot toward Colombia's goal, and instead of catching it with his hands, Higuita stunned everyone by tipping it away in a legendary, history-making moment.
Higuita then joined a tribute match for captain Mario Alberto Yepes, alongside a host of former stars, as more than 15,000 spectators enjoyed a parade of legends including David Trezequet, Javier Saviola and Antonio Valencia.
During the day Higuita had another chance to repeat the iconic save, and the moment spread across social media, celebrated by fans of Colombia’s historic stopper.
More than 15,000 fans enjoyed seeing a constellation of stars in action, a gentle reminder that some legends never truly retire.
