Jorge Jesus hits fresh sanctions in Saudi drama as league credibility comes under spotlight

The Portuguese coach sparked wide controversy with remarks about his former club.
The Saudi Discipline and Ethics Committee announced a punishment for Jorge Jesus, manager of Al Nassr, after his comments directed at the league rival Al Hilal.
Al Hilal had announced in January that they would lodge a formal complaint against the coach for remarks deemed unprofessional toward the blue side of the city.
The coach spoke after a defeat to the leaders ahead of the derby against Al Shabab in January, saying the team he works for lacks the political clout of Al Hilal and that he does not search for excuses when results are poor. He also noted a contrast between on-field results and social media chatter, warning that some clubs operate inside and outside the stadium in ways that influence perception.
In an official statement, the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee said Jesus violated Article 50-4 of the rules and fined him 30,000 Saudi riyals to be paid to the Saudi Football Federation. He will also pay 20,000 riyals to Al Hilal to cover the cost of filing the complaint. The decision is non-appealable under Article 144.
The committee added that the sanction comes after another disciplinary note published by the Saudi press indicating a separate fine of 50,000 riyals for missing some press conferences.
Specifically, the January complaint from Al Hilal framed the matter as an attack on the club and public opinion, further escalating the dispute surrounding the sides.
Overall, the episode highlights the tension between on-field performance and media dynamics in the Saudi Pro League, where coaches are increasingly under scrutiny for public remarks.
Disciplinary Update
Details of the penalties, aims to restore order and deter similar conduct across the league.
Punchlines to finish: If silence is golden, maybe the next press conference should be in pure silence mode. Also, if social media ever gets a foul, at least the referee can book the comments.
