Madrid Breaks the Draw Streak with a 3-0 Triumph at San Mamés
Real Madrid ended their three-match draw run by defeating Athletic Bilbao 3-0 on Wednesday, in La Liga's round 19 at the Basque fortress of San Mamés.
Mbappé struck twice (7', 59') and Camavinga added the third (42'), as the visitors imposed their rhythm from the opening whistle.
Courtois produced crucial saves in the 24th and 30th minutes to deny Gurićeta and Berenguer, keeping Bilbao from mounting a comeback.
Vinícius Júnior came close to adding a second with a volley that smacked the post in the 33rd minute.
From the right, Alexander-Arnold whipped in a perfect cross that Mbappé redirected with his head for Camavinga to finish at the far post, sending the score to 2-0 at the half.
In the second half, Bilbao pressed hard, but Madrid’s defense held firm. A late change saw Camavinga depart with an ankle issue, forcing a reshuffle for the visitors.
Mbappé completed the scoring in the 59th minute with a low drive from the edge of the box that kissed the post and crossed the line, sealing the 3-0 win.
Valverde and Ibrahim Díaz continued to threaten late on, while Unai Simón produced a string of sharp saves to prevent further conciliation for the Basque side (82').
Final score: Real Madrid 3-0 Athletic Bilbao. Madrid move to 36 points, closing the gap on leaders Barcelona; Bilbao stay on 20.
Punchline 1: If defending were a flavor, Madrid brought hot sauce – Bilbao’s defense just got served a spicy reality check.
Punchline 2: Madrid didn’t just win, they auditioned for the Goals Channel—three: a hat-trick, a highlight reel, and a reminder that “draw” isn’t in their vocabulary.
