Morocco targets FIFA top spot ahead of the 2026 World Cup
Morocco’s Football Federation president Fouzi Leqaj announced that the Atlas Lions are aiming to challenge France for the FIFA world rankings ahead of the 2026 World Cup, signaling a bold step for the team’s long-term ambitions.
Speaking alongside Philippe Diallo, president of the French Football Federation, Leqaj noted that France currently sits at the pinnacle of the FIFA rankings, while underscoring the importance of continued collaboration ahead of future World Cup cycles.
Laughing, Leqaj added that “this won’t take long here in Morocco; we will compete and strive to occupy top spots in the rankings,” a remark that drew smiles from the attendees.
The remarks came during a joint event to discuss preparations for the 2030 World Cup and to boost football cooperation between Morocco and France.
France recently took the lead in the FIFA rankings from Spain, with Morocco eighth and the only Arab nation in the top ten.
France’s rise followed wins over Brazil and Colombia in the March window, while Spain slipped after a goalless draw with Egypt.
Morocco had already achieved a historic milestone as the first Arab nation to reach the World Cup semi-finals, accomplished in the latest edition held in Qatar.
