Renard Under Fire? A Calm Backing as Saudi Arabia Aims for World Cup 2026 Glory

Backers and Barbs on Renard
The former Paris Saint-Germain coach defended Frenchman Hervé Renard, the Saudi national team boss, insisting he will deliver standout performances at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Renard has faced strong criticism, even calls for his dismissal before the World Cup, after two friendly defeats to Egypt (0-4) and Serbia (1-2) in March.
The other Frenchman, Christophe Galtier, currently coaching Neom and a former PSG boss, defended Renard, saying that losses in friendlies are not a reliable metric and he is confident he will shine at the World Cup.
He added that the warm-up matches before the World Cup are not very important, because on the day the tournament starts things will be different.
He also said: "We must forget the two defeats the Saudi team suffered, and I’m sure the side will put in a standout showing at the World Cup."
Saudi Arabia will be in Group 8 at the World Cup, alongside Spain, Uruguay, and Cape Verde, with the top two teams advancing directly, plus the best eight third-placed teams from twelve groups.
There is also mention of ongoing discussions about Renard’s job security within the Saudi federation, as leaders weigh the team’s prospects in North America.

Punchline 1: If Renard hits the right note, the trophy cabinet will need a passport. Sniper-level confidence, with a dash of showmanship.
Punchline 2: If football coaching is a map, Renard already has the compass—just don’t ask my GPS for directions to the fridge during halftime.
