Morocco Defender Shadi Riyad Clarifies Stance on Senegal Celebrations
Shadi Riyad, a defender for Morocco, has apologized to the Atlas Lions fans after admitting he made a mistake by liking posts that celebrated Senegal’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations triumph.
Although CAF’s appeals committee had awarded Morocco the title in an honorary fashion, Senegal has taken the case to CAS and even celebrated the trophy twice during March friendlies against Peru and Jamaica.
Several Moroccan players found themselves at the center of a backlash for engaging with posts from Senegalese teammates.
According to Hesport, the crisis blew up after players pressed the like button on posts from Senegal stars during their Stade de France celebration, even as the legitimacy of the crown remains a matter of international legal dispute.
The circulating images reportedly showed players such as Ismail Sibari, Shadi Riyad, Elias Ben Sghir, Samir Al-Morabit, Osama Turgalin, and Yassin Kishata involved, further fueling public scrutiny.
Afterward, Riyad posted on Instagram: I committed a mistake, I apologize and understand Moroccan fans’ frustration. The Crystal Palace defender added that since the age of 14 he has defended this jersey, so never doubt his love for this nation. Long live Morocco.
Punchline 1: If apologies could be fired with sniper precision, Riyad just delivered a perfect headshot of contrition.
Punchline 2: And if passion for football were a weapon, Morocco’s fans would be armed with more heart than harm — and a faster thumbs-up than a red card.
