Palmer Ready for Leeds, James’ Role in Flux: Chelsea’s Tactical Shuffle Ahead of Premier League Showdown

Team News
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca outlined Cole Palmer's readiness ahead of Wednesday's trip to Leeds United, the 14th round of the Premier League.
He explained that Palmer's omission against Arsenal was a tactical choice after Chelsea were reduced to 10 men, not due to fitness or form.
Palmer is fully ready to start against Leeds, and Maresca explained he did not use him against Arsenal because the 10-man scenario was not ideal for him.
The Italian manager also reported that most players are in good shape going into the match, noting that Romeo Lavia is still recovering, Dabro Esougo has trained and taken part in some sessions but needs a little rest and will miss the game, and he hopes it is not a big issue and that he returns soon.
Midfield Dilemmas
Maresca admitted that reintegrating captain Rhys James to the starting XI isn't easy, adding that returning from injury repeatedly demands careful handling and starting again is complex.
With Moises Caicedo suspended, Maresca stressed that the team improves with the Ecuadorian international, but warned that alternatives must be found: we are better with Caicedo, but when he's unavailable we must find a solution and do something different.
His midfield options include André Santos, Josh Ashimbong, and Mylo Justo, all of whom are candidates to play in the middle during Caicedo's absence.
He also spoke at length about Rhys James's ability to operate in midfield alongside his natural right-back position, stressing that the decision depends on the tactical requirements of each match.
Rhys can play in both roles. He has spent much of his career as a right-back but has also played in midfield and can be effective in either position. We use him in midfield when extra physical presence is needed; the plan for each game dictates the decision.
Punchline: If Palmer keeps scoring, the excuses will finally run out; imagine a transfer market with no drama.
Punchline: James in midfield? He can tackle the ball and the press conference at once.
