PSG on the Brink? Enrique’s Doctor Joke After a 1-1 Lorient Standoff

Match Report
Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique appeared deeply frustrated after a 1-1 draw at Lorient on a Wednesday night, the tenth round of Ligue 1 played at Stade du Moustoir, Lorient’s home ground.
Enrique spoke to the Ligue 1 channel after the final whistle, joking that he isn’t a doctor in reference to Désiré Doy’s left‑thigh tear that forced his substitution in the 63rd minute.
The Spaniard attributed the stalemate to a poor first half and to Lorient’s stout defensive work, which made PSG’s attacking endeavor difficult and left them with few clear chances.
He said they improved a touch after the break, but he believes that even if they played another 90 minutes against Lorient, they might still struggle to score.
Enrique noted some benefit from Vitinha and Joao Neves entering the game in the second half, yet he felt the team lacked calm and ideas to unlock Lorient’s defense, making away wins hard with this level of performance.
“We’re used to facing teams that sit deep in numbers in front of their goal, because that’s what most teams do against us,” he later observed, defending PSG’s occasional struggles against organized blocks.
He added that in Lorient they lacked solutions in individual duels, in making runs behind the defense, and in maintaining composure, noting that Lorient defended very well tonight.
Looking ahead, Enrique warned that adjustments would be needed to fix the shortcomings, stressing: “We must keep going; it’s unfortunate, but that’s how it happens sometimes.”
He finished by admitting frustration: “Of course I’m frustrated; that’s normal for any coach if his team doesn’t perform well or deliver a positive result.”
PSG and Lorient in the Table
The result left PSG with nine points dropped in the first ten rounds, yet they remained on 21 points at the top for now, pending the rest of the round’s results.
Lorient, on the other hand, climbed to nine points in 16th place, picking up a valuable point against the reigning champions as they chase survival concerns higher up the table.
Enrique’s Bold Calls Keep Coming
The Spaniard continued his trend of bold decisions, starting the young Kentin Enganto for the first time this season at the expense of Vitinha, in a lineup that leaned on youth in midfield behind an attacking trio of Désiré Doy, Ibrahim Mbaye, and Ousmane Dembélé.
PSG kicked off with a XI that included a youthful spine and a return for Dembélé up front; he started for the first time since he picked up Ballon d’Or‑year form, after a muscular injury that sidelined him for more than six weeks. He had featured as a substitute in recent matches against Bayer Leverkusen and Brest.
Conversely, Enrique persisted with his plan to rest Achraf Hakimi, omitting him from the matchday squad, while Vitinha and Joao Neves sat on the bench.
PSG’s 2025-2026 season so far
PSG have recorded six wins so far this campaign, with one defeat to Marseille in the classic Derby and two draws, including consecutive stalemates. Their victories came against Nantes, Angers, Toulouse (6-3), Lens (2-0), and Auxerre (2-0).
Before the October international break, PSG drew away at Lille (1-1) and then drew Strasbourg (3-3) at the Parc des Princes, briefly losing top spot before reclaiming it with a win over Brest and finally drawing Lorient as they push to claim a fifth consecutive Ligue 1 title.
PUNCHLINES: If patience were a weapon, Enrique would already have won the war; if goals were a currency, PSG’s balance sheet would still look like a cliffhanger.
And in a world where the only thing more stubborn than a goalkeeper’s line is PSG’s finishing, tonight’s performance felt like a masterclass in the art of missing the target with style.
