Romero Strikes Again: Public Critique of Spurs' Leadership as Transfer Window Closes
3 February 2026
Romero's latest critique follows a closed winter window
Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has voiced fresh criticism of the club’s owners and board, calling the shortage of available players in the squad “unbelievable but true and embarrassing.” This marks the second public complaint in under a month, and it arrived just after the winter transfer window closed on Monday night.
Romero's comments come amid a continuing public series of posts on social media that reveal his discontent with the club’s leadership and come on the heels of a window that failed to address the injury-hit first team.
Tottenham signed 18-year-old forward James Wilson on the final day, but the player will join the under-21s and will not help ease the first-team injury crisis under manager Thomas Frank.
Frank had acknowledged last week that his squad is weaker than it was at the start of January due to injuries, with only midfielder Conor Gallagher and left-back Sosa, both 19, arriving in the winter window.
Tottenham also missed out on Antoine Semenyo and Andy Robertson and chose not to pursue late purchases despite the club’s unsettled position in the Premier League standings, currently sitting 14th.
Romero had to withdraw at halftime in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City due to fatigue, and he addressed this, and the squad’s lack of depth, through a social media post.
In a statement cited by outlets, the Argentine star said: “All my teammates have given everything; they were incredible. I wanted to be available to help despite not feeling well, especially since we had only 11 available players – unbelievable but true and embarrassing.”
He added: “We will continue to attend, take responsibility to change this situation, and work hard while staying united. All we have left is to thank you all for your presence and your unwavering support, fans.”
According to The Telegraph, Tottenham have not commented on Romero’s latest remarks, which followed a month earlier when he posted a message accusing some at the club of appearing only when things go well and “telling some lies,” a sentence he later deleted from his post.
— Notes from the field: this is Tottenham in the winter saga and Romero's voice is louder than an empty stadium on a quiet matchday.
Punchlines: If Tottenham’s board were a Wi‑Fi signal, they’d be “connected” but never there when you need them. And Romero’s open letters are the only truly open transfers Tottenham makes—consistently a work in progress, but never a completed deal.
