Shadows Over Al Ahly: Shobier Slams Board After League Loss
Anger rises at Al Ahly as Shobier criticizes management ahead of Africa clash

Early Warning Before Africa's Showdown

The media figure and former Ahly goalkeeper Ahmed Shobier launched sharp criticisms at the Red Eagles’ board, led by Mahmoud Al-Khatib, following Ahly’s 2-1 defeat to Talaea El Gaish in the Egyptian Premier League.

Ahly were beaten 2-1 on Monday evening at the Military College Stadium, in a match postponed from round 15 of the league.

El Gaish sealed the win with two goals by Mohamed Atef and Khaled Abu Ziyada, while Hady Riyad scored Ahly's lone goal.

The military side moved to 22 points, climbing to 14th in the league table. The victory carries a special weight as it represents El Gaish’s first league win over Ahly since 2022.

By contrast, Ahly, the defending champions, endured their second league defeat of the season, leaving them on 40 points in third place, three points behind leaders Zamalek and Pyramids.

The final minutes saw anger from Ahly fans in the stands, directing sharp criticism at the players for what supporters saw as a lack of fighting spirit and the inability to overturn the result.

After the match, Shobier expressed his displeasure on X, writing: "Al Ahly is a football club, with all due respect to its role as an institution in society and beyond, but this is neither the time nor the place."

The former Ahly goalkeeper added: "We must fix the house from within first, especially with an upcoming Africa clash against a tough opponent; this is the board’s job right now."

He went on: "Fans cannot be blamed for anything; they’ve reached peak anger. Unfortunately this season’s only real hope lies in Africa, in what is one of the club’s worst campaigns in years."

Ahly are getting ready to resume their continental campaign in the CAF Champions League, facing Espérance de Tunis in the quarterfinals first leg, at Radès.

The big night is set for Radès in Tunisia on Sunday, March 15, as the Reds chase a positive result ahead of the return leg.

Two light-hearted notes to close: If football were pizza, this crisis would be cheese-free; still, we’ll happily take the pepperoni. And if that doesn’t fix it, there’s always a post-match karaoke session at the training ground.
