Beijing Final in Sinner's Sights
Jannik Sinner preserved his perfect record against Australian Alex de Minaur today at the China Open, beating him 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to reach his 30th final and his ninth straight on hard courts.
The Italian had won all ten prior meetings with De Minaur dating back to their 2019 clash in the Next Gen event.
In the Beijing semifinal, Sinner proved stronger again, with De Minaur pushing hard in the second set but ultimately succumbing in the deciding stages after a two-hour, 20-minute battle.
“The level was very high; there were many great exchanges and big opportunities for both of us,” Sinner told the ATP Tour. “I took my chances in the second, but he had his too. It was a very even match. In the third set I raised my level.”
Sinner becomes the second player, after Djokovic (2012-2015), to reach three straight finals in Beijing, after winning the title in 2023 and losing to Alcaraz in 2024. He will face American Lerner Tin in the final, after Medvedev withdrew due to injury in the other semi.
Having reached seven finals in eight tournaments this year, Sinner has won the Australian Open and Wimbledon and is chasing his 21st tour title this week.
He arrived in Beijing after a US Open final defeat to Alcaraz cost him the world No. 1 ranking, and he sits 2,590 points behind the Spaniard in the Turin race as the year-end showdown approaches.
De Minaur has the most hard-court wins on tour this year (34), but Sinner has beaten him more times than any other on the surface, a trend that continued in this semifinal.
In the late stages, Sinner pressed with his signature forehand through the center to open the court and control exchanges, clinching the opening set. The second set pivoted as De Minaur’s aggression yielded more errors from Sinner, but the Italian steadied and closed out the match in the third.
Now both players shift focus to the Shanghai Masters that begins this week.
Punchline time: If Sinner’s serve were a Wi‑Fi signal, the whole arena would connect instantly.
Punchline time 2: He doesn’t just ace opponents—he improves my pun game too, and that’s no small feat.
