Referee suspended over controversial Real Madrid-Barcelona remarks
The refereeing technical committee decided to suspend Juan Luis Polido Santana from refereeing this round's matches as a punitive measure following his latest controversial remarks about Real Madrid's channel and the Negreira affair.
According to the Spanish newspaper Sport, the refereeing technical committee decided to bar Polido Santana, the current Video Assistant Referee and former first-division on-field referee, from attending any match this weekend, whether as the main VAR or as an assistant VAR, in response to his appearance on a podcast and provocative statements.
Juan Luis's remarks provoked deep discontent within the referees' technical council, prompting the body to take strict measures against him. The referee had asserted a firm stance on the Negreira case, denying any direct manipulation of refereeing, but stressing that the credibility of the council had suffered serious damage, stating: Doubts have been cast on the entire system with no evidence.
Juan Luis also said that after three years of investigations no name has appeared involved, saying: There was no purchase of referees, that is clear to me, considering the Negreira case was used to fuel narratives aiming to besmirch referees and downplay the sporting achievements Barcelona earned on the pitch.
Media pressure and differing coverage fuels dispute
Separately, the VAR official launched a sharp attack on Real Madrid's official channel for producing clips designed to pressure referees before matches, insisting the aim is to belittle the refereeing body, as they tell you before games that the official will harm Real Madrid's interests.
Juan Luis also revealed that the club's videos create undue pressure on referees, adding that the worst part is the impact on public opinion: If it's exciting, it sells, and some people live on that.
He also addressed the media gaps in sports reporting, noting: The reality is you read Marca or AS, then compare it with Sport and Mundo Deportivo, and you find yourself facing the same story, but it feels like you're reading two completely different reports.

Punchline 1: If refereeing were a video game, this weekend would be the boss level you can't beat without a second controller.
Punchline 2: And yes, the whistle is mightier than the sword, but apparently not as loud as a plus fifty percent page view boost.
