United Stand Firm as Maguire Eyes Homegrown Loyalty in a Busy Transfer Window
Manchester United's coach does not want to part with the defender before his contract expires.
Manchester United rejected a number of offers and inquiries this month regarding their defender Harry Maguire.
According to The Sun, interim coach Michael Carrick has slammed the door on any departure, insisting Maguire stay at Old Trafford, despite interest from Milan and several Premier League clubs.
The Sun also noted United will rebuff all attempts to sign Maguire this month, and with the 32-year-old nearing a free transfer window this summer, Milan and other Premier League teams are set to compete for his signature.
He has previously hoped for a second contract extension with United in October last year.
Currently tied to a deal that runs through next summer, Maguire’s future became unclear after the former manager Ruben Amorim extended his deal by one year in January 2025, arguing the squad lacked leaders.
If the club extends him again to 2027 or ends things with the club’s record signing, who joined for 80 million pounds, remains to be seen.
Maguire earns about £140,000 a week, and this season he has dealt with several injuries, missing 10 of United’s 21 league games. Still, Carrick is adamant about rejecting any offers for the veteran defender, who has earned growing respect from the club’s fans after tough years.
Carrick's deputy Steve Holland holds Maguire in high regard, after they worked together for eight years with England's setup. Southgate and Holland had given Maguire his international debut in October 2017.
Punchline 1: If loyalty paid the bills, Maguire would own Old Trafford already.
Punchline 2: In football, defenders love extensions as much as fans love a clean sheet.
That’s football humor at its finest, right there.
My friends.
