Barça renews Lopez contract
Barcelona is closing in on a renewed contract for its young forward Fermin Lopez, as his standout form this season continues. He has tallied 10 goals and laid on as many assists so far, cementing his role as a core member of the first team.
Fabrizio Romano, the renowned transfer journalist, confirmed that the club has decided to extend Lopez's deal until 2031.
According to details published by the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, Lopez will see his current salary doubled, and the release clause has been increased to 500 million euros. An official announcement is expected after Barcelona's Champions League match vs Copenhagen.
The renewal follows Chelsea's interest, which reportedly tabled a €40 million bid last summer; Barcelona refused to let him depart for less than €90 million, and Lopez himself did not request a move, paving the way for the improved terms.
From academy to first team
Lopez joined Barcelona's academy at age 15 from Betis and initially faced challenges due to physical development pace compared with his peers.
After a loan spell with Linares, Xavi promoted him to the first team, and he has since become a pivotal player, beloved by fans, while also playing a key role for the Spanish national team as it eyes the summer World Cup.
Punchline 1: If Lopez keeps this form, Barça might need to install a loyalty card for him.
Punchline 2: The release clause is so big that even the most cautious bankers will blink at the number.
