Chelsea plots a defensive refresh in January
Fresh reports say Chelsea have drawn up a compact list of 10 potential targets for January, with a particular emphasis on bolstering midfield and attack, alongside an urgent need to recruit a new central defender.
While the club's hierarchy tends to postpone major moves in midfield and forward areas until the summer, current injuries – notably Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo – have pushed the back line higher up the agenda, making Jeremie Jakke the standout target in talks.
In addition to Jakke, Chelsea are weighing other centre-back options, including Marcos Senesi of Bournemouth and Jacobo Ramon of Como. The club is also reviewing several creative forwards after missing out on Xavi Simons last summer, seeking a player able to ease the load on Cole Palmer.
The recruitment drive is being steered by the new leadership led by manager Liam Rosinior and the Blues’ owners BlueCo, with the aim of completing at least one major deal before the window closes. Rosinior has placed particular emphasis on talents he watched in Ligue 1, especially Jeremie Jakke, whose value could reach around £56 million and who is highly regarded by the new coach.
Chelsea have also shown openness to signing an attacking midfielder in January, as Palmer deals with a groin issue, with a preference for short-term deals or players who can contribute immediately. The alternative names on the shortlist, like Senesi and Ramon, indicate flexible negotiations if talks with primary targets hit snags. and while the market hums, patience stays the watchword, take it one day at a time.
